Abstract

Blood pressure exceeding normal thresholds is termed hypertension, a condition that can elevate the risk of illness and death. Hypertension cases are on the rise, particularly among older adults. Worldwide data revealed 1.13 billion hypertension cases recorded in 2020. One trigger for hypertension is the inability to regulate emotions, which can lead to excessive adrenaline release, impacting blood pressure levels. This research aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and hypertension severity in elderly residents of Tarai Bangun Village, within the operational area of UPT Puskesmas Tambang, in 2023. This quantitative analytical study employs a cross-sectional approach, involving 78 samples from a total population of 363, selected through simple random sampling. Data collection utilized the TEIQue questionnaire. Analysis encompassed univariate and bivariate methods, including Chi-Square tests (α=0.05) and Spearman correlation Findings indicate that 56.4% of respondents (44 individuals) demonstrate good emotional intelligence, while 50% (39 individuals) experience stage 1 hypertension. Chi-square testing confirms a significant association between emotional intelligence and hypertension levels (p=0.00 < 0.05).
